Inter-brain synchronization during a cooperative task with complementary roles following an unexpected perturbation: a fNIRS hyperscanning study

Résumé

Unexpected external perturbation influences team performance through its coordination ability. Given the existence of brain rhythms synchronization in two individuals cooperating together, this study aimed at testing the effect of a perturbation on the neurophysiological coordination. Forty-two participants (21 dyads) divided in two groups (Control vs Experimental) took part in this study. The task was designed to reproduce the complementarity roles present within an aircraft cockpit. The perturbation consisted of an unexpected increase in task difficulty. Coordination was assessed through the Inter-Brain Synchronization (IBS) measured by fNIRS hyperscanning over the prefrontal cortices. While the protocol proved to be relevant, the results show that the proposed perturbation had no effects on IBS.
