Emissions of volatile organic compounds from floor coverings and influence of ageing

Résumé

The aim of the “SafeMater” project was to compare the pollutants emissions of several types of plastic floorcoverings (eight commercial references were selected) to determine whether new products qualified as biobased or depolluting were significantly less emissive than their petrochemical counterparts. Results showed specific emissions profiles according to the type of material. While most of the VOCs identified are well known and reported, some are emerging pollutants and considered toxic as benzothiazole, an additive emitted by rubbers. The effect of materials’ ageing on VOCs emissions was then studied, allowing estimate their impact on indoor air quality throughout their lifetime. Globally, a significant decrease in VOCs concentrations was observed for all the studied materials after 400 hours of accelerated ageing. However, several oxygenates, mainly linear aldehydes, resulting from the thermo- oxidative degradation of polymers or natural components, were observed at high concentrations during ageing kinetics.
