Decision-making in Crisis Situations : Research and Innovation for Optimal Training

Sophie Sauvagnargues

Résumé

The ongoing possibility of crisis situations due to technological or industrial accidents and natural disasters (amplified in the context of climate change) means that crisis management is a fundamental skill for any manager. Indeed, national legislation and societal expectations require leaders to be suitably prepared to face unexpected situations that may exceed the organizations’ ordinary capacity. The expertise and organizational support required for effective decision-making during a crisis is complex to acquire and maintain. Additionally, decision-making in emergency situations is challenging due to the high levels of stress in intense or dangerous situations and can be subject to representational biases that impact decisions. This book presents the concepts, tools and methods that can be implemented to improve the training of managers in crisis situation decision-making and explores the latest research results concerning serious games, scenario design and crisis exercises, crisis communication, and appropriate and effective pedagogical objectives.
